Our story, your future

Becoming Beacon

In 2024, Halton Credit Union evolved and became Beacon Savings & Loans. Why the change? We wanted to serve you even better.

Our journey began long before that, though. Back in 2002 in Runcorn and Widnes, three separate credit unions saw an opportunity to unite under the new Halton borough. This wasn’t just any merger; it marked the creation of the country’s first amalgamated ethical credit union. From these roots, we grew, expanding to serve not just Halton but the wider Cheshire area and neighbouring WA postcodes in Merseyside.

As the world moved online, so did we. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated our digital transition, leading us to launch an app that lets you manage your finances anytime, anywhere.

A lifeline for our communities

Our members have always been our inspiration. In fact, Beacon Savings & Loans was named after members described us as their “life savers.” It’s a name that keeps us grounded and reminds us of our responsibility — being a true beacon of support, not just in name but in action.

At Beacon, your money does more than just grow — it boosts our communities. We make sure that profits benefit you, not distant investors, by providing fair credit union loans and savings accounts that help those often ignored by traditional banks.

We’re a cooperative with a strong online presence and multiple physical locations. Our core commitment hasn’t changed as an ethical credit union. It’s still and always will be you. Wherever life takes you, your voice guides us. Every decision at Beacon is an opportunity for you to shape a future where everyone thrives.

Our purpose

We’re here to make a real difference in the lives of our members, employees and communities.

How do we do it? Our credit union loans and savings add tonnes of value. As do our initiatives. We invest time and resources in community projects like sponsoring local sports teams, providing information at local events and volunteering at the community cafe.

Our team members are all in, too. They give their time to volunteer, team up with other good people for a cause, and keep our communities strong.

Our mission is to spotlight and tackle both social and environmental issues, making sure we’re pushing for real change.
