Understanding and easing financial stress

Financial stress will affect all of us at one time or another –, millions of people in the UK struggle every day. Financial difficulties are a common cause of stress and anxiety, causing sleepless nights and day-to-day pressure. Stress awareness month is a chance to pause, recognise how and why money worries show up in our lives, and explore how we can take steps to make things feel more manageable.

How financial stress can make you feel

Money worries don’t just affect our bank balance, they can influence our wellbeing, relationships, and confidence. Common signs may include:

  • Feeling overwhelmed when bills arrive
  • Avoid checking bank balances
  • Diffcuilt concentrating or making decisons
  • Tension at home around spending or debt
  • Trouble sleeping or a constant nagging worry

These feelings are much more common than people realise. Feeling any of these feelings is nothing to be ashamed of. Stress and worry thrives in silence and taking small steps can help ease and bring your worries under control.

Why financial stress happens

Financial stress can come from many different places and for many different reasons. Whether it’s from mismanagement, something unexpected, or somewhere between the two it is important to remember that most people experience these worries, and most things can be resolved with some quick and easy steps. These reasons can include:

  • Rising household costs
  • Unexpected expenses
  • Irregular incomes
  • Arelationship breakdown
  • Bereavement
  • Existing debt
  • Lack of budgeting know how

Although the reason may vary, you need to find the right support and tools to help you regain a sense of control.

Practical ways to help you reduce financial stress

Small, consistent actions can help you make a meaningful difference to your finances, which can help reduce the stress that can come with it.

Places to start:

  • Create a simple budget you can stick to: even a weekly plan helps you to see what is coming in and going out. When making a budget, make sure you allow money for entertainment.
  • Break BIG worries into smaller tasks, (one phone call, one form, one email). Take one step at a time. If you’re worried about being able to afford repayments, reach out to the people you owe money too. Open communication makes it easier for everyone to know what is going on.
  • Review your subscriptions and regular payments: cancelling unused services can help give you some breathing space, make sure you cancel free trials before the enrolment date to avoid being charged.
  • Build up a small, emergency buffer. Helping our members to do this is important, it’s why wee require all members to lock in £2.50 per week for the duration of loans to ensure that they have a savings pot built up.
  • Talk to someone you trust. Sharing the load, will often make it feel a little lighter. Sometimes it’s someone you know, other times it’sis an organisation who can help you. You need to reach out to someone that you feel comfortable to talk to.
